Delicious Blueberries, Gorgeous Looks and Four Seasons of Interest!
Want to grow your own blueberries and add ornamental value to your garden throughout the year? The Elliot Blueberry Bush is perfect for you.
Your garden will be adorned with fragrant, bell-shaped white blossoms in the spring. Then, during late summer, large, light-blue berries begin to grow and will continue to produce a harvest all the way into early fall. And the autumn show is spectacular with crimson and orange leaves. Since you’ll likely still have blueberries growing in early fall, the contrast of cool and warm colors will be mesmerizing.
Even in winter, this 4-6 foot bush will add value to your landscape with its red tinted stems and branches. The benefits don t end there:
-
Large, firm berries: Elliot Blueberries are typically half an inch when ripe, and their firm texture makes them an irresistible snack.
-
-
Bountiful harvest: Most bushes produce around 25 pounds of blueberries each season, but you can increase your harvest by planting alongside another variety.
-
-
Hardly any maintenance: No pests, diseases, fertilizing, or excessive pruning to worry about. Just protect your plant from birds and you’re set!
-
You can plant several in a row to create an ornamental hedge. And with a beautiful bounty of blueberries, these bushes pull double duty as a smaller privacy screen and backyard supermarket. You’ll love eating your fresh-picked, tart blueberries, baking them into a pie, or even making your own blueberry sorbet to enjoy on a hot summer day. Their firm texture and large shape make them ideal for freezing.
Speaking of freezing, the Elliot Blueberry is cold hardy, so you can grow these bushes all the way up to zone 5. The Elliot is also self-fertile, so you’ll get a robust harvest from just one bush, though you’ll get even more berries if you cross-pollinate with another variety. This gorgeous bush produces delicious blueberries and is a favorite among blueberry growers – order yours today!
Planting & Care
You can plant your Elliot Blueberry in a spot that gets either full sun or partial shade, but the soil should be acidic and well-draining. Elliot blueberries require the same soil as Azaleas, so they make an excellent companion. Leave 6 ft of space in between your bushes. Birds love blueberries too, so make sure you use a garden net to get the most out of your harvest. Plant in a hole twice is wide, but just as deep as the root ball. Add a layer of mulch to prevent weed growth and help retain moisture.
Watering: Make sure your bush receives 1-2 inches of water each week, whether through rain or by watering.
Fertilization: There is no need to fertilize the Elliot Blueberry.
Pruning: You won t need to prune your Elliot Blueberry unless you want to manage the size and shape of the hedge. If so, prune in late winter.
When to pick: Your blueberries are ready to pick and eat when they fall right into your hand. When they easily fall off without plucking, then they re perfectly ripe. Blueberries will last 1 week in your fridge, but you ll need to freeze them if you don’t eat them in a week.
