While they start out pale green, like your typical pear, they turn a golden, bronze hue as they ripen.

Your Hosui Pear tree has been nurtured by our growers for years. We don’t ship them until they’re mature and ready to provide fruit. You can expect them to peak in mid-August. These pears ripen on the tree and keep up to two months.

More Than a Pear Tree – It’s a Striking Ornamental!

The glossy, dark green foliage that emerges quickly changes to a coppery bronze color in mid spring. Planting & Care

Location: The Asian Pear ‘Hosui’ grows best in USDA plant hardiness zones 5 to 9.

Chill Hours: Hosui Asian pear trees require 400-500 chill hours to set fruit.

Pollinators: The Hosui tree is somewhat self-fertile but to produce an adequate crop of fruit the tree requires a pollinator. Try the Bartlett or the 20th Century pear trees for pollination. Plant the trees 25-50 feet apart to ensure pollination.

Planting Instructions: Choose a planting location in full sun for best fruit production. The ideal planting site should have well-draining loamy soil with a pH balance of 6.0 to 7.0. Plant the tree in the early spring to provide it with sufficient time to establish a root system before winter.

Dig a hole twice the size of the tree’s roots and just as deep. Place the tree’s roots into the hole and gently spread them out across the soil’s surface. Fill the hole with an an organic rich topsoil. The tree’s graft bud should sit 2 to 3 inches above the soil’s line after the hole is backfilled in with the topsoil. Tamp the soil down around the tree’s roots to remove any air pockets. Water the tree thoroughly after planting to settle the soil and remove any air pockets.

Irrigation: Irrigate the Asian pear tree when the top 2 to 3 inches of soil feels dry to the touch. Once established, the tree will require 100 gallons of water per week during periods of hot, dry spells. Simply place your garden hose at the base of the tree on a trickle and allow it to stay there for roughly an hour to ensure it irrigates deeply.

Fertilizing: Fertilize the pear tree for the first time one month after planting. Use half a pound of 10-10-10 fertilizer. Sprinkle around the base at least 16 inches away from the tree’s trunk and water well.

Pruning: The Hosui pear tree should be trained to a central leader system and requires very little pruning. Suckers should be removed as they form.
